The historical and legendary Hollywood Forever proudly celebrates DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS (DAY OF THE DEAD) with artists of the year Esmeralda and Saul Reyes.
This year, they traveled to the town of Capula in the Mexican state of Michoacán in search of the famous Catrinas of Capula and the artists known for creating the most beautiful of these elegantly and symbolically dressed female skeletons – icons of Día de los Muertos and Mexican culture.

The Catrina of Capula featured in this announcement was commissioned during our meeting with the Reyes in their studio. Our Catrina is styled and attired in the traditional indigenous dress of Michoacán. She is magnificently detailed with hundreds of Esmeralda’s Monarch butterflies. The Monarchs, believed by the indigenous people to be the sprits of their dead, still return to the highland forests of Michoacán each November.

Following in the family tradition of their indigenous Purepechas ancestors, Saul and Esmeralda began to work alongside their parents when they were growing up. When we visited their home and studio this February, we also met their son, 6 year old Jesus, who was already proudly showing off his own small clay sculptures warming in the family kiln in their backyard. Their works are a team effort with Saul often doing the molds and Esmeralda handcrafting the details and decorating the Catrinas.
Children 8 years and under, property owners and seniors 65 and over free until 4:00PM.
